About Trauma & EMDR

Healing begins
where the wound was made.
-Alice Walker
Trauma is like an emotional wound that hasn’t healed, often caused by difficult experiences we couldn't fully process at the time. These wounds can lead to lasting pain, creating feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety, and isolation. When traumatic events aren't processed properly, unresolved emotions can get "stuck" and affect how we see ourselves, others, and the world. These lingering effects show up as challenges or repeated patterns in our lives.
EMDR therapy helps address this by engaging the whole person—thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs. It uses bilateral stimulation (BLS), like guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds, to activate both sides of the brain. This stimulation helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories and the negative beliefs linked to them in a less overwhelming way. By helping the brain integrate these memories, EMDR reduces their emotional charge and allows them to be understood in a healthier way. This process targets the root causes of emotional pain, leading to lasting relief and healing.
